In connection with our Center of Excellence – IDUN, DTU Nanotech is looking for a PhD student within microfluidics and Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS).

We wish to employ a PhD student for 3 years to build on our previous PhD student’s exciting research direction and take it to next level. Could this be you?

At IDUN, we explore the use of micro- and nanometer-sized objects for applications within sensing and oral drug delivery. This project focuses on sensor development and applications – with a focus on applications within medicine and pharmaceutical sciences. The project will involve collaboration with industry, as well as with other departments at DTU and the University of Copenhagen.

You will work in a highly interdisciplinary project focusing on applying sensor platforms based on microfluidics and SERS to study complex samples such as blood, saliva and urine. The targeted applications are within diagnostics and fundamental studies of drugs mechanism of action. Applications within water analysis might also be included.
Responsibilities and tasks
Your main task will be to develop specific applications of our centrifugal platform with integrated surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing. This includes the development of sample pretreatment steps and assay development.

We have recently discovered a filtration effect of our nanopillar SERS substrate – this also needs to be investigated further. 

We might try to combine SERS and electrochemistry, which could offer new possibilities for sample pretreatment.

You will play a role in the sensor section of the Nanoprobes group, interacting with several members working in different disciplines, such as microfabrication, plasmonics, electrochemistry, pharmacology and polymer science.

You will also work in close contact with other researchers at the IDUN center of excellence. You need to thrive in an international, multidisciplinary and highly ambitious team. It is crucial that you have the interest and motivation to contribute to this collaborative project.
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

A master’s project or previous work experience regarding assay development, analytical chemistry and/or SERS sensing will be beneficial.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
